White water rafting in Lee Valley

The Lee Valley White Water Centre in Waltham Cross, England, is a renowned canoe slalom and leisure park located approximately 30 kilometers north of London in the Lee Valley Park in Hertfordshire. This modern whitewater facility is considered one of the best of its kind worldwide and is best known as the venue for the canoe slalom events of the 2012 Olympic Games. Since its completion in December 2010, the center has become a popular destination for thrill-seekers, families, and water sports enthusiasts, offering both professional training and leisure activities. It is a standout example of the legacy of the London Olympic Games, combining sporting excellence with an accessible experience for the public.

Canoe slalom competitions Olympics

The facility was specifically built for the Olympic Games and was the first newly constructed venue to be completed on time. The main competition course is an internationally recognized, 300-meter-long canoe slalom course with an average gradient of 1.8%, featuring artificially designed rapids and obstacles that meet world championship standards. It is complemented by a 160-meter-long training and warm-up course and an artificial lake that feeds the pumping system and serves as a warm-up and cool-down area. The facility utilizes a sophisticated water management system that moves up to 15 cubic meters of water per second to create realistic whitewater conditions. After the Olympic Games, which saw temporary grandstands set up for 12,000 spectators, the center also hosted the Canoe Slalom World Championships in 2015 and 2023, and now serves as a training base for the British national team.

Family-friendly water activities

Since April 2011, the Lee Valley White Water Centre has been open to the public, offering a variety of activities beyond canoe slalom. One of the main attractions is whitewater rafting on the Olympic course, where visitors can conquer the rapids in inflatable boats - an adrenaline-filled experience that requires no prior experience and is accompanied by professional guides. For families and less experienced guests, there are calmer options such as paddle boats or kayaks on the lake, providing a relaxing way to enjoy the water. Additionally, courses for kayaking and canoeing are offered, giving both beginners and advanced paddlers the opportunity to improve their skills. A Water Wipeout Splash Zone adds extra fun, especially for younger visitors, with inflatable obstacles and interactive water activities.

Adventure sports in Lee Valley

The infrastructure of the center is designed for comfort and versatility. Two dining facilities - a restaurant serving modern cuisine and a terrace tavern - invite guests to linger and offer views of the water activities. An on-site shop sells equipment and souvenirs, while changing rooms and showers make the visit convenient. The facility is largely wheelchair accessible, with pathways and facilities that are also accessible to wheelchair users, although some activities may have physical requirements due to their nature. The location in the Lee Valley Regional Park, a 42-kilometer-long nature reserve, enhances the experience with opportunities for walks or bike rides in the surrounding area, which is home to a rich variety of wildlife and plants.

Training for kayaking and canoeing

The Lee Valley White Water Centre is appreciated for its versatility and quality of experiences. Visitors praise the professional organization, friendly staff, and the opportunity to experience Olympic-quality conditions up close. Criticism is rare, although some note that the facility can be crowded on particularly busy days, leading to waiting times for popular activities like rafting. The occasional mention is also made of the dependence on good weather for full use of the outdoor areas. However, the enthusiasm for the unique combination of sporting thrills and family-friendly fun prevails.

Just watched a u tube video about DJ audits auditing this place. Absolutely 💯 from the staff, that is how you should treat the public.

Great facilities as you would expect from something built for the Olympics, and still looks great now. Nice even to just sit and spectate on a sunny day from the sidelines, parking is not too expensive either.

My friend and I were at Lee Valley White Water Centre on 05/02/2025 at 12:12:35 to have lunch, and we attempted to pay for parking. We tried to do so through phone, but it said “temporarily closed.” We also tried using the QR code, but the system wouldn’t open. It is not our fault that you have issues with your system, yet we are being forced to pay the fine. Despite this, we even asked the staff how it works because we were unable to make the payment, and they simply responded, “Scan the QR code.” This is shameful on your part. “What else can I do besides this?”

Great white-water course, Legacy for beginners, Olympic course for the more experienced. You need to book to be assessed first, which is fair enough to weed out the 'danger to themselves' people but the assessment on the Legacy requires you to get into a difficult eddy at the start of the course meaning you need to be a good paddler to be allowed on here. This is crazy as this is supposed to be a safe place to learn. Safe due to the watchers with ropes. This is a catch 22 situation. You can't get on it to learn or improve without being already good! Therefore how is one supposed to learn? The assessment needs to be lowered. Lovely water quality

Several things let this place down. Firstly the service in the cafe was very poor and the kids meal was dangerously salty for my toddler, I ended up chucking it away. I don’t understand why people work in service when they can’t communicate kindly to people? Another annoying feature was booking. my husband received a voucher for his birthday so was just booking for a single. It kept getting cancelled as they said there wasn’t enough people. When he finally got a place ( almost a year later) he was the 9th in a boat of 8. They stuck him at the front without a paddle with a lazy corporate group that weren’t even trying to paddle. It was incredibly frustrating for him being so sporty. They were all meant to swap with him but he ended up mostly being the one without the paddle. Anyway would recommend as a present for a single person it’s only enjoyable as a group. And take your own food it’s not worth rude interaction.

You use to be able to park for free now you need to pay. They want people to use the places or walk around but it cost all the time

Fairly unpleasant coffee matched by a fairly unpleasant member of staff. Won't be going back for drinks or snacks in the future. Place and surroundings seemed nice enough
